Survival Tips For the Broken-Hearted by Stephen Stewart-Nixon

The breakdown of a loving relationship is one of the most traumatic and stressful periods of anyone's life. Often after a long battle to rescue the relationship the point of no return is reached and both parties realize they have reached the end of the road. This is often the start of an emotional roller coaster ride to recovery which can last for weeks months or even years, with the duration depending on the individual circumstances.

For centuries we have had the benefit of pain relief for physical pain but unfortunately there is no panacea for emotional pain except the age old adage "time heals". Indeed, time does heal and we the testament of millions who have suffered heartache and gone on to find love with someone new.

Is there anything you can do to shorten the period of pain and even reduce the intensity of the feelings? Fortunately with recent advances in our understanding of the human mind and emotions we know there are simple psychological techniques and strategies which greatly assist with your recovery.

While these techniques cannot be fully addressed in an article, I can give you some advice on certain behaviors we all are tempted to follow while suffering from emotional stress.

Do's
Do watch inspirational TV shows and Movies.
Do look up old friends; real friends will be glad to see you.
Do listen to up lifting music. Do go on holiday.
Do exercise, even walking can lift your spirits.

Do Not's
Do not contact your ex, at least not until you have regained your strength.
Do not try to find logic in your ex's behavior or "reasons"
Do not listen to melancholy music (it will make dwell on the problem) Do not watch the news or read newspapers (they are filled with negativity)
Do not listen to gossip about you ex. (it serves no purpose)

Initially your thoughts will be filled with the break up and you will feel overwhelmed. By working hard at looking for the positive and avoiding the negative you will gradually find light in the darkness. It is a painful journey but you can shorten it by taking control of your thoughts and actions.
